Redecorating or even decorating your house for the first can be a tiresome ordeal. Although the results are definitely worth it still it can be exhausting to decide on every little detail. From the colour of the walls to the type of furniture that will go in the living room. Everything needs to be decided.
Among all these, lights can be easy to miss. But it is just as important. It can make or break the look of a room. With this checklist, the task of selecting the light fixture can be a little easier for you.
The type of bulb you want
The first decision that you need to make is about the type of bulb you need. This choice is important because it will eventually decide the options you will get for the fixtures. The electricity bills that you have to pay at the end of every month are also decided by this choice.
You may think that there are only one or two types of lights but it is not the case. You can choose to go for incandescent bulbs or LED tube lights for home. There are other options as well like halogen incandescent bulbs, fluorescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs.
Fluorescent bulbs are the traditional options. They are easy to install and most people are familiar with them. LED light bulbs are the new introduction in the lighting industry. These bulbs consume very little energy but they have a complex mechanism.
Halogen incandescent bulbs are a much greener alternative but it is not energy efficient at all.
Fluorescent light bulbs are more efficient. It is only dangerous if the bulb breaks. This is because the mercury stored in it can be toxic for humans. Compact fluorescent bulbs are even more energy-efficient than fluorescent light bulbs.
Different types of light fixtures
There are several types of fixtures available in the market. You should research and see all the options before buying something for your home.
Some lights are better for smaller rooms and can make the room appear bigger. There are others that will fit better in larger rooms.
Chandeliers and pendant lights require a large wall height to be installed properly. The length of the lights tends to be longer than usual. Chandeliers are large light fixtures themselves with multiple bulbs in them. Pendants have lamps that are attached to the wire. The lamp itself is normal sized but the wire is long.
There are others that you can find that can fit in smaller places.
Interior of your home
The type of home you have or want will influence what kind of lights you should get.
If you have a traditional theme in your home then you should get similar fixtures. Otherwise, it will spoil the look that you were going for. Although most of the homes are opting for a modern and sleek look nowadays.
The colours should also be complementary. The lights could be in accordance with the colour scheme of the room or it can be a contrasting colour. Then it will become the signature piece in the room. Different rooms have different requirements. The lights should be purchased while keeping these in mind. Living rooms should have bright lights so that the room is entirely illuminated.
Bathrooms can have more focused lighting. Inside of general illumination, certain areas need to be in the spotlight. Like the bathroom mirrors and washbasins.
Hallways do not require much lighting. It should be just enough to light the way and allow a person without having to stumble. You can use LED down lights for homes in these areas. You can dimmer options as well as brighter alternatives.
Brightness
The brightness of the light can really make a difference for a room especially, for homes where the rooms are relatively smaller. In larger areas such as factories or halls, the lighting needs to be bright but they are also at a distance so the people are not really affected by it.
But within homes, the lighting is way closer. It cannot be too bright. The brightness needs to be just the right amount. So that the room is illuminated but it is not too much.
